A key element of what West Hill is about is encapsulated in our sporting tradition. The personal development and teamwork skills inherent in sport, contribute to the growth of the West Hill boy. Sport has always been a significant component of our curriculum. It is extended by the many opportunities for sporting engagement both in our after school programme, as well as our weekend fixture lists. Few state schools have the weekend commitment we have here at West Hill, but thanks to our dedicated PE staff, we compete across a whole range of sports both locally and further afield. This even extends to tours abroad, and the West Hill badge has been displayed with distinction across distant rugby, football and cricket fields in recent times. Our boys have represented school across the globe in places such as South Africa, the USA, Canada, France and Holland. In 2022 we are revisiting Sri Lanka again on another cricket tour.
The weekend fixtures are currently suspended, but our dedicated PE staff are still wanting to maintain opportunities for our boys. As I referenced last time, we have rolled out some extracurricular activities this week and the buy in from the boys has been excellent. We are going another step forward this Saturday when Y7 will be competing in an intra form football tournament. The intention is to then repeat this on successive Saturdays with other year groups. Unfortunately due to the Covid restrictions, we currently can’t have families on site to spectate. But in time, that restriction will be lifted. Until then, the feedback we receive illustrates how much families appreciate the sporting experience West Hill provides, and for certain we know the boys revel in it.
We have a notable sporting alumni, many have forged careers as professionals across many sports as well as achieving national representation. Their interests and skills were developed at West Hill, and we are proud of our contribution on their journeys to excellence. But moreover, whilst we applaud the achievements of our most notable athletes, our key motivation is to equip every boy with the desire to continue with sport at any level. We see that as a vital component in lifelong learning and facilitating a healthy lifestyle, which is key in developing wider well being.
We are constantly looking to improve our facilities and we have a very exciting development being prepared. I will be able to share more details of this in the near future but I am certain that the boys will be thrilled when it is revealed. Once in place, it will truly enhance the sporting opportunities for our boys and will be another chapter in our West Hill sporting heritage.
