Curriculum

Year 7

Lesson contact time is 2 hours per week.  The subjects studied are:

  • Workshop health and safety
  • Theoretical concepts of components
    • Resistors
    • Switches
    • Light Emitting Diodes
    • Basic transistor concept
  • Component symbols recognition
  • Resistor colour code including calculations and measurement unit
  • basic use of a multi-meter to measure resistance
  • How to test, evaluate and repair circuit boards

Year 8

Lesson contact time is 2 hours per week.  The subjects studied are:

  • Workshop health and safety (recap)
  • Use of C.N.C. miller to produce a circuit board
  • Theoretical concepts of components:
    • Loudspeaker
    • Capacitors
    • Potentiometers used as variable resistors
    • Basic integrated circuit concept
  • Component symbols recognition
  •  Use of a multi-meter to set potentiometers to a set resistance value
  • Use of Ohms law to calculate a protection resistor
Year 9

Lesson contact time is 2 hours per week.  The subjects studied are:

Course Overview

Component 1: Discovering Electronics (40%)

Written Paper: 1 hour 30 minutes

  • A mix of short answer questions, structured questions and extended writing questions, with some set in a practical context

Component 2: Applications of Electronics (40%)

Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes

  • A mix of short answer questions, structured questions and extended writing questions, with some set in a practical context
Component 3: Extended system design and realisation task (20%)

Non-exam assessment

  • An extended system design and realisation task to assess electronics skills
