On Friday evening, a night of celebration was held at San Rocco for the 33 young people and 5 staff who spent a month in Uganda this summer.

After a welcome from Tom Gibson’s entertaining band, Miss Mason welcomed the expedition leader James West, who presented his video diary of the trip, packed with pictures, songs, videos and interviews from everyone we encountered. Joe Murphy read out a poem he had written, with Finlay Malcolm reading a report that had been published in a local newspaper. Miss Frear’s quiz on the trip accompanied the buffet at the interval, before Mr Lawton showed the video slideshow of all the pictures that the pupils had taken in Africa.

The main part of the evening was the presenting of the certificates from Camps International and the Ugandan Wildlife Authority, congratulating everyone on completing the expedition and climbing Mount Elgon. Pupils were given their ‘Star of the Day’ awards from whilst we were away, along with certificates for ‘project winners’ and ‘excellence awards’. The final presentation was to Harry Bunn, who was crowned ‘Emperor of the Expedition’, for his wonderful work ethic and ability to motivate and entertain the group. A final chorus of thanks were given to everyone involved in the trip from the headteacher, Mr Harrison, before Jackson Buckley and his guitar played out the evening.

Thanks to all pupils, staff, family and friends who attended this fantastic event and supported the Uganda expedition over the past two years.
