20 March 2020

Following the announcement by the Government on Wednesday, we can now confirm that as of 3.10 on Friday 20th March, school is now closed until further notice.

The Government also announced schools should consider how to support vulnerable children and the children of key workers.  The delay in the government providing the information needed to make the necessary arrangements, has delayed our ability to make effective plans.  All families have received a survey (via text, app and email) that will help us consider how best to respond. We will be in contact with families directly if we are able to offer them a place.  Your son should not attend school until you have had such direct contact.  We should not underestimate the danger presented by boys and staff being in school or similar settings. The situation is changing rapidly and our response continues to be fluid. We appreciate your continued support.

For those families who receive free school meals, again we are working on an effective means to support such families.  We will communicate when we are in a position to confirm such arrangements.

We have been able to keep the school open to all boys until this Friday, primarily due to the commitment of our staff, and positive behaviour by our boys, in these challenging times.  We remain committed to balancing the needs of supporting our families with the safety of our boys, staff and wider community.

The message is clear; If it is at all possible for children to be at home, then they should be.

For our year 11 families, again this is an uncertain situation as we await clarification on the impact of the cancellation of the summer assessments.  We will do everything in our power to ensure our boys are not disadvantaged in any way.  Their efforts have not been wasted. The value of what they have learnt will serve them well and provide the foundations needed to pursue their future ambitions.

The need to continue with learning for our boys is outlined at https://www.westhillschool.co.uk/parents/covid-19-coronavirus

Our commitment to support our boys remains as strong as ever and we will continue to update you moving forward.

These are challenging times for us all and we urge everyone to ensure they follow the social distancing advice and avoid unnecessary risk to themselves and others. Parents should also do everything they can to ensure children are not mixing socially in a way which can continue to spread the virus. They should observe the same social distancing principles as adults.

We will continue to update you via our communication channels.  Whilst it is tempting to phone our office, please appreciate they will only restate these messages.
