West Hill School recognises its responsibility to safeguard the welfare of its pupils by protecting them from physical, sexual or emotional abuse, neglect and bullying. It is determined to meet its obligation to ensure that West Hill School provides opportunities for pupils to do so with the highest possible standard of care.

Every pupil at West Hill School should be able to participate in an enjoyable and safe enviroment and be protected from abuse. This is the responsibility of every Member of Staff at West Hill School.  We recognise however that child abuse is a very emotive and difficult subject. It is important to understand the feelings involved but not to allow them to interfere with our judgement about any action to be taken.

All pupils, whatever their age, culture, disability, gender, language, racial origin, religious beliefs and/or sexual identity, have the right to protection from abuse.

All Members of Staff and Governors receive Child Protection Awareness Training every three years so that they understand their roles and responsibilities and are confident about carrying them out. On going training is provided for Supply Teachers and Trainee Teachers whilst working at West Hill School on block placements.

Child Protection procedures are in place and updated as appropriate and all staff are aware of both Tameside Child Protection proceedures and the West Hill Child Protection Policy.

The Designated Person for Child Protection at West Hill School is Mr James Whiting (Assistant Head) and the named Governor at West Hill School is Elaine Pickford, initial contact can be made via the school switchboard on 0161 338 2193.
