Curriculum Aims               

We aim for every boy to:

• engage with challenging texts and ideas which have stood the test of time;
• develop cultural capital and knowledge of the English language and literary canon;
• build vocabulary and “word consciousness”;
• be able to read critically and write accurately, precisely and effectively; 
• commit learning to long-term memory;
• develop scholarly habits, language and attitudes.

Curriculum Information

Qualifications

In years 10 and 11, students study for two GCSEs in English: AQA GCSE English Language (specification code 8700) and AQA GCSE English Literature (specification code 8702). Both are linear courses, and both are assessed by two examinations each – totalling four examinations taken at the end of year 11. There is also an NEA Spoken Language Endorsement in English Language. Students are required to speak on a topic of their choice and then answer questions from their peers. This is graded, although the grade does not contribute to the final GCSE grade.

Students will learn to read critically, use evidence to support their interpretations, zoom in on the effects of writers’ methods and choices, and engage with the bigger picture of themes and contexts. In their own writing, students will learn to write concisely and accurately, as well as adapting their language for a range of different purposes, audiences and forms.

Summary of Assessment

Linear exams in English language consist of 2 equally weighted papers. Linear exams in English Literature consist of two unequally weighted papers.

• Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes
• Macbeth and A Christmas Carol
• 64 marks
• 40% of the qualification

English Literature 8702/2 – Modern Texts and Poetry

• Written exam: 2 hours 15 minutes
• An Inspector Calls, Anthology Poetry, Unseen Poetry
• 96 marks
• 60% of the qualification
